DALTON - A man lying on railroad tracks was run over by a train Wednesday north of Dalton, authorities said.
The train's engineer told investigators with the Whitfield County Sheriff's Office that he sounded the horn, but the man didn't move. The engineer hit the emergency brakes, but the train went over the man before it stopped.
Sheriff Scott Chitwood said investigators did not know why the man was on the track. A wallet was recovered, but the victim's identity was withheld until his family could be notified.
In the past two years, there have been several pedestrian accidents on the same stretch of track, including another fatality. In December, a freight train passed over a Dalton man on the Norfolk Southern tracks, leaving him uninjured except for a few scrapes.
Chitwood said drifters often walk across the track in that area.
