FORT BENNING - Officials at Fort Benning blew up about 275 pounds of missing explosives discovered on the grounds of the Army post.

Assistant Chief of Police Wesley Mott says it was safer to detonate the sticks of explosives - which were reported missing last week from a Columbus paving company - than to move them.

Acting on an anonymous tip, law enforcement officials recovered the ammonium nitrate sticks - which were taken from the Robinson Paving Company - in a wooded area on the grounds of Fort Benning near the Tenth Armored Division Road and Chattsworth Road intersection.

Officials said the site - which is in a kind of buffer zone around the fence that secures the base - is not secure and can be entered easily from a public road.

Agents from the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms are working with local officials in the investigation.
