WASHINGTON - The FBI warned banks in the nation's capital of a bomb threat Monday and urged them to evacuate branch offices downtown, according to federal bank regulators.
"We've been alerted to the fact and are referring all calls to the FBI," said Don Powell, chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. "There is an alert concerning a possible bomb at a bank."
At least one downtown bank closed temporarily.
A sign on an Eagle Bank branch in downtown Washington read, "Temporarily closed due to emergency." The sign indicated the bank would reopen in the afternoon.
