Alarm malfunction leads to alert at Appling nuclear plant

BAXLEY - A malfunctioning power supply unit led to an alert Tuesday at the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant near Baxley, in southeast Georgia. <br> <br> Federal, state and local officials were notified after the power unit stopped working about 10:40 Tuesday morning. <br> <br> Rick Kimble is a spokesman for Southern Nuclear Operating Company in Birmingham, Alabama. He says the unit supplies power to alarm indicators on Unit 2 control panels. <br> <br> Kimble says the problem was fixed, and the alert ended after two hours, with no threat to the public and no danger of radiation release. The unit continued to operate at 100 percent capacity during the alert. <br> <br> The Hatch plant is owned by Georgia Power Company, Oglethorpe Power Corporation, the Municipal Electric Authority and the city of Dalton. <br> <br> Southern Nuclear is a subsidiary of Southern Company.
