Arizona company recalls egg biscuits because they may be contaminated with listeria

WASHINGTON, D.C. - An Arizona food company is recalling an unspecified number of packaged sausage and egg biscuits because they may be contaminated with listeria, a potentially deadly bacteria. <br> <br> MarketFare Foods of Phoenix said one illness has been reported because of the product. The bacteria was discovered by the Florida Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration, according to the company. <br> <br> The ``Deli Pride Egg, Sausage, & Cheese Biscuits&#39;&#39; subject to recall are packaged in 4-ounce boxes and are labeled with a code date of 080243. <br> <br> Company president Al Carfora said he did not know how much of the product was still on shelves. It was distributed to 35 states. <br> <br> Listeria food poisoning can cause high fever, severe headaches, neck stiffness and nausea. In pregnant women, it can cause miscarriages and stillbirths. For people with weak immune systems, such as the elderly, infants, cancer chemotherapy patients and people with AIDS, the food poisoning can be fatal. <br> <br> Consumers should return the product to the store where it was purchased for a full refund, according to MarketFare. <br> <br> People with questions can call MarketFare Foods at 1-602-275-5509. <br> <br> The product was sold in the following states: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.
