ATLANTA - DeKalb County residents and environmentalists are protesting landfills in the southern part of the suburban Atlanta county.
Demonstrators gathered Monday at the state Capitol chanting and carrying placards with slogans such as ``Dump the dump.''
Residents from the predominantly black south DeKalb area have complained for years that their area is a designated dumping ground.
DeKalb is home to eight landfills, but the largest are in the county's southwestern end.
The Live Oak Landfill near Interstate 285 accepts more solid waste than any other landfill in Georgia.

Its stench is familiar to motorists on the perimeter highway between Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport and Interstate 20 east of Atlanta.
Some DeKalb state legislators have introduced a resolution to close Live Oak. Governor Barnes is scheduled to meet with anti-landfill activists about the issue Tuesday.
