Big Game leads booming lottery sales

ATLANTA - The state's economy may be slowing, but at least one sector is booming: the Georgia Lottery.

Officials say they are selling more tickets than ever, especially when there are big jackpots like the $155 million Big Game grand prize that was up for grabs last night.

Lottery spokeswoman Tandi Reddick says that as of Monday, the Georgia Lottery had sold $200 million more in tickets for all games this year than the same time last year.

Richard McGowan is an economics professor at Boston College who studies gambling. He says state lotteries are generally recession-proof.

Last night's jackpot was the third largest in the seven-state Big Game's history. No one has won since February 5th, and the jackpot has rolled over 17 times.

Reddick says that in that time, ticket sales increased a thousand percent.
