ATLANTA - Susan A. McLaughlin has resigned as chief operating officer of AGL Resources after one year on the job at the parent company of Atlanta Gas Light Co.

McLaughlin, who also was president of Atlanta Gas Light, is stepping down from the position as the Legislature completes action to revamp Georgia's 1997 natural gas deregulation law.

The changes will have a major impact on Atlanta Gas Light, the supplier of natural gas for the state's deregulated marketers.
Paula G. Rosput, chairman and chief executive of AGL, was quoted in a news release late Wednesday as saying the company was ``disappointed to lose an executive of Sue McLaughlin's caliber.''

Last year, McLaughlin had a salary of $148,558, plus a bonus of $250,000 and $13,976 in other compensation.
Her duties will be assumed by Kevin P. Madden, whose new post is executive vice president of distribution and pipeline operations. Madden has served for a year as vice president of legal, regulatory and governmental strategy.

Rosput came to AGL in 2000 from Duke Energy to replace Walter M. Higgins. Higgins replaced most senior managers after he was hired in 1998 from a Nevada utility. He resigned to return to Nevada.

Rosput brought in McLaughlin and Madden last April as part of her own senior management team.
McLaughlin had no gas utility experience. She had worked for BellSouth and Eastman Kodak. In an interview last fall, she said she ``never shied away from a challenge before.''
