ATHENS - Vince Dooley examines the injury and shakes his head sadly. This magnolia seems to be out for the season.

Dooley built a legacy as the pigskin patriarch of the football-crazy University of Georgia. In 25 years as coach here, he won 201 games and a national title and turned out so many NFL-caliber ball carriers the school was dubbed ``Tailback U.''

He still works a strong ground game, but these days it involves more hydrangea than Herschel.

Dooley says he's always been curious about plants although he had no background on them.

Following his habit of attending classes that interest him, he earned a master's degree in history while an assistant coach at his alma mater, Auburn. And he has audited dozens of classes at Georgia, particularly those taught by horticulturists Michael Dirr and Allan Armitage.

Dooley co-chaired a committee with Dirr to have Georgia's historic campus designated an arboretum, and twice toured gardens in England with the professors.

He also has his own garden, which he calls one for all seasons in which something blooms at any time of the year.
