MARIETTA - Cobb County authorities said Tuesday that charges against a Marietta couple would be upgraded to murder after their 2-year-old daughter died Tuesday afternoon.
According to a criminal warrant filed in Cobb Magistrate Court, the child was shaken so severely, her retinas detached. The warrant said the alleged shaking incident occurred Saturday night at the couple's home.
Alonzo Tate, 37, and Stephanie Edwards, 35, were charged with aggravated battery and were held without bond after a hearing Tuesday. Cobb County Police spokesman Brody Staud said the charges would be upgraded to murder after completion of an autopsy on Wednesday. A bond hearing was set for April 24.
Rescue workers were called to the couple's home around 2:15 p.m. Sunday. The mother told dispatchers that the baby had stopped breathing.
The baby girl was taken to WellStar Cobb Hospital, where doctors say they found signs of violent trauma.
She then was transferred by helicopter ambulance to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.
Investigators said the baby suffered injuries ``consistent with having been shaken.''
