Hobby days are here again

Hobbies are wonderful ways to relax and get away from the demands of life for a while in a creative way. That goes for adults and children, alike. Unfortunately, some hobbies that children and parents pursue in the home can lead to poisonings.

·Adult hobbies which involve materials that could pose dangers to children should be kept out of main traffic areas of the house if small children are around.
·Parents who make stained glass or bullets, for example, create lead dust which can travel through the house. Venting to carry the dust outside should be installed. Carefully wet mop the area with a phosphate detergent to control dust.
·Ceramic artists often use lead-containing glazes, which can also be harmful to children. If lead-containing glazes are used in the home, children should not be allowed in the area, and the glazes should be kept out of reach and locked up when not in use.
·Super Glue and other "instant adhesives" prompt numerous calls to the Georgia Poison Center when children-and adults-glue their fingers to other parts of their bodies or to other objects. Some children have even unintentionally glued their eyes shut with the product. Young children should never be allowed to use these products, which should be reserved for users at least 12 years of age who are responsible and not easily distracted.
·If you buy prepackaged hobby "kits," follow any age recommendations printed on the box. If the hobby materials used by an older child, such as models and model paints, are not intended for use by younger children, keep younger children out of the area where they are being used.
·For young children, look for labels that state materials are "non-toxic."
