Spelman names racial relations expert as new president

ATLANTA - Beverly Daniel Tatum has been named the ninth president of Spelman College succeeding retiring Audrey Forbes Manley in leading the historically black college for women. <br> <br> Spelman&#39;s Board of Trustees voted Friday to appoint Tatum - the acting president of Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, Mass. - to the new post. She is scheduled to begin in August. <br> <br> The search committee worked for eight months wading through 160 candidates to fill the position. Tatum, 47, was the only one invited to campus for an interview. <br> <br> Tatum, a race relations expert and clinical psychologist, earned her bachelors degree from Wesleyan University and her masters and doctorates from the University of Michigan. <br> <br> She joined Mount Holyoke&#39;s faculty in 1989 and was most recently dean of the college and vice president of student affairs. She is the author of the 1997 book, ``Why Are All the Black Kids Sitting Together in the Cafeteria?: And Other Conversations About Race.&#39;&#39;
