Police confused over identity of woman who shot officer

AUGUSTA - Police now say they aren&#39;t sure of the identity of the young woman accused of shooting a sheriff&#39;s deputy and escaping from custody. <br> <br> At first they thought it was Crystal Chanell Brewer, 18, of Memphis, Tenn., who shot Columbia County Deputy Glenda Shelton while the officer was transporting her back to jail from a court hearing Friday afternoon. <br> <br> But after capturing the woman Saturday following a 12-hour search, police say they aren&#39;t sure who she is. <br> <br> The woman currently is being identified as Tamika Bumpass, 23, of Memphis. But because she is suspected of using up to 10 different aliases, police say it may be some time before her identity is known. <br> <br> The woman, who was being held on forgery and identification theft charges, was the only prisoner in a van driven by Shelton when she began to complain of feeling sick. When Shelton lowered a plexiglass panel to give her more air, she reached through and a struggle began. <br> <br> During the fight, the woman took the deputy&#39;s handgun and shot her in the left side of the chest, then turned the gun on a passerby and stole his pickup, police said. <br> <br> Shelton was listed in good condition at Medical College of Georgia Hospital.
