Officials say Fort Benning appears safe from cutbacks

FORT BENNING - Fort Benning appears not to be in danger from proposed Army program and personnel reductions, according to elected officials who met a high-ranking Army officer. <br> <br> Gen. John N. Abrams, commander of the U.S. Army&#39;s Training and Doctrine Command, met Monday with U.S. Sen. Max Cleland, D-Ga., and U.S. Reps. Sanford Bishop, D-Albany, and Mac Collins, R-Jackson. <br> <br> Abrams ``pretty well assured us that there would be no need or no demand to remove anything out of Fort Benning,&#39;&#39; Collins said. ``He told us that plans are for additional Rangers for the Ranger School and additional soldiers for airborne.&#39;&#39; <br> <br> ``I think the future is very sound,&#39;&#39; said Cleland, a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee. ``I think Fort Benning and the Infantry School there in particular is critical in the war on terrorism.&#39;&#39;
