FRANKFORT, Ky. - The Sierra Club has filed a lawsuit against poultry giant Tyson Foods for allegedly failing to clean up waste from four Kentucky chicken farms.
The lawsuit, mailed to court officials Monday by the environmental group, includes charges that Tyson failed to report releases of ammonia.
The federal Superfund law requires a permit if an operation releases more than 100 pounds of ammonia per day.
Tyson is among poultry companies that have contracts with farmers to grow chickens, typically in large, barnlike structures called chicken houses.
"Tyson Foods and the farmers who grow chickens for us are dedicated to adhering to the laws of the land and being good stewards of the environment," the Springdale, Ark.-based company said in a statement Monday.
Tyson operations in three western Kentucky counties are at issue in the suit. Local residents have also filed complaints in court against Tyson and the chicken farms over the smell.
