VALDOSTA - Valdosta State linebacker Michael Fowler has been suspended from the team indefinitely following his arrest on drug charges.

Fowler, 21, an All-Gulf South Conference selection as a junior last season, was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute after police searched his mother's home in Poulan.

Also arrested Friday was Fowler's father, Esker, 51, who was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and possession of a firearm during a crime. Both are free on bond.

Poulan Police Chief George Whiddon said the search uncovered 27 pieces of crack cocaine. Fowler said the drugs were not his and that he was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

VSU athletic director Herb Reinhard said school policy calls for an automatic suspension when a student-athlete is charged with a felony.
