LAFAYETTE - Plans to build a homeless shelter in the Catlett Community are drawing objections from residents.
More than 400 people have signed a petition opposed to a plan to build a shelter for homeless men. One resident who signed the petition said there are not enough homeless people in LaFayette to warrant a shelter.
Members of Catlett Community Church have asked the commissioner for support in seeking a faith-based initiative grant to fund the shelter.

If approved, the grant could mean as much as 250-thousand dollars toward the ministry.
The Reverend Lila Clay said her church has been reaching out to the homeless for six years. She said the shelter would be built and operated to reflect the character of the community and help those in the area.
Clay said she will be generating a petition of her own in support of the measure.
