ATLANTA (AP) Most motorists would be fined $100 for driving with an expired license tag.

Not the police.

It is unclear how many of the unmarked cars driven by Atlanta detectives and police supervisors have expired tags, but Wednesday night at City Hall East, 27 of 62 cars didn't have an up-to-date sticker on their tags.

``It's news to me,'' Mayor Shirley Franklin said. She said she would talk to Police Chief Beverly Harvard about it.

``It's a mess,'' said Officer Richard Straut, who was stopped by Atlanta police last week. Straut, president of the police union, drives an unmarked car because he handles investigations.

Rick Anderson, the city's chief financial officer, blamed bureaucracy.

The city's Bureau of Motor Transport has been in chaos since its head resigned last month when officials started questioning him about money from the city's vending machines, Anderson said.

Police said they have been told the bureau ran out of stickers.
