SAVANNAH - A police crackdown on a concert by the band Widespread Panic resulted in 38 arrests and eleven citations, mostly for drug offenses.
Police said they bolstered their presence at the Savannah Civic Center concert Wednesday night after ``Spreadheads'' -- fans who follow the band from show to show -- upset residents last year by selling beer, shooting fireworks and camping in the city's historic squares.
The city even paid about $1,240 to send two Savannah officers to scout the scene at a concert by the popular Athens band last weekend in Asheville, North Carolina.
Police said the arrests included possession of drugs, possession with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, disorderly conduct, public urination and having open containers of alcohol.
Dozens of officers, some with drug-sniffing dogs, were stationed around the Civic Center hours before the show. Besides drugs, they were hunting for unlicensed food and beer vendors.
