MARIETTA - A judge ruled Friday that a Cobb County couple charged with murdering their 2-month-old baby will be held without bond.
Thirty-seven-year-old Alonzo Tate and 35-year-old Stephanie Edwards were arrested Monday and charged with aggravated battery. That was upgraded to murder after an autopsy showed the baby died of violent trauma.
According to a criminal warrant filed in Cobb Magistrate Court, the child was shaken so severely Saturday night that her retinas detached.
Rescue workers were called to the couple's home around 2:15 p.m. Sunday. The mother told dispatchers that the baby had stopped breathing.
The baby was taken to WellStar Cobb Hospital, where doctors say they found signs of violent trauma. She then was transferred by helicopter ambulance to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.
She was taken off life support and died Tuesday afternoon.
A judge denied bond for the couple during a hearing Friday morning.
