Perry man sentenced in elderly fraud case

MACON - A Perry man was sentenced Friday to more than 17 years in prison after a Macon judge found him responsible for a fraud that targeted the elderly. <br>

U.S. District Court Judge Hugh Lawson sentenced 47-year-old David A. Cawthon. <br>
<br>
Cawthon must also return more than $2.1 million to victims of his scheme. <br>
<br>
Also convicted were 58-year-old Wayne Lindsey and 38-year-old Benjamin Lindsey of Lenox, as well as 34-year-old John Perry Tifton and 33-year-old Keith Harned of Macon. <br>
<br>
The four were convicted in January on charges including wire fraud, mail fraud and securities violations. <br>
<br>
The scheme was run between November 1996 and June 1997, with the men collecting more than $7 million from investors. <br>
<br>
They sold cash contracts to investors to be used for various humanitarian projects. They also promised investors interest rates of 10 and 21 percent and told them their money was insured.
