WARRENTON - An Atlanta-bound Greyhound passenger bus struck a tractor-trailer from behind on Interstate 20 early Sunday morning in Warren County, injuring the bus driver and 17 passengers.

Authorities closed westbound lanes and rerouted traffic for nearly six hours.

One of the 35 passengers says the driver fell asleep during the 210-mile trip from Columbia, South Carolina, where the bus switched drivers.

Authorities say the injured passengers were taken to hospitals in Augusta and Washington where they were treated and released. The injuries were mostly minor, including broken noses, scrapes and bruises, state patrol spokesman Gordy Wright said.

Bus driver Antonio White, 40, Atlanta suffered an amputated foot in the crash and was hospitalized in serious condition. White underwent surgery but it was unclear whether doctors were able to reattach his foot.

The crash happened about 3:00am on I-20. No charges have been filed in the crash, which remains under investigation.

The Greyhound bus was being operated by Atlanta-based Southeastern Stages Incorporation under an agreement between the bus companies. Southeastern drives the Greyhound bus each day from Fayetteville, North Carolina to Atlanta, where a Greyhound driver then continues the route to Dallas.

Southeastern sent a bus to retrieve the passengers, who resumed their journey Sunday afternoon.
