MOBILE, Ala. - The body of a 19-year-old woman was recovered from the Gulf of Mexico on Tuesday by Coast Guard crews searching for an Alabama family missing since departing on a weekend shark fishing trip.
Sabrina Crumm, 19, was found wearing a personal flotation device about five miles south of a barrier island in the Mississippi Sound near the Alabama-Mississippi border, said Petty Officer Steve Caskey, a spokesman with the Coast Guard in New Orleans.
The missing family members were identified as Rodney Crumm, 45; his wife Beverley, 32; their daughter Sabrina; and a stepdaughter Christina, 12. Beverley Crumm's brother, James Taylor, 30, was also missing.
Rescue crews also found large amounts of debris from the 32-foot converted shrimping boat in which the family departed.
The family probably got lost in the Gulf amid heavy winds and rains Saturday afternoon, Petty Officer Mark Mackowiak said.
Three helicopters, a plane and two search-and-rescue boats have been searching for the boat since a relative of the family reported them missing, Mackowiak said.
Caskey said the search would continue at least through Tuesday. The effort has covered 4,020 square miles, mostly in waters south of Alabama.
"Once we feel like we've exhausted all our means and feel there's no expectation of survivability we'll evaluate our search efforts," he said.
