Tech beats GSU; Dogs split with James Madison

It was a win Sunday for Georgia Tech on the baseball Diamond in Atlanta, while in Athens, the University of Georgia Diamond Dogs split with James Madison.<br> <br> Jeremy Slayden homered and drove in four runs to lead Georgia Tech to a 12-to-five win over Georgia State Sunday. Tech starter Kyle Bakker (4-0) allowed four runs, three earned, and struck out five batters in six innings to get the win. <br> <br> Georgia State (4-5) led two-to-zero after a two-run home run by Dustin Phillips in the third inning, but Tech (9-1) answered with nine runs in the fourth. Slayden&#39;s three-run homer put the Yellow Jackets up three-to-two. Tech then loaded the bases and scored three more runs on two walks and a hit batter. A two-run double from Clifton Remole and a R-B-I single by Slayden capped the scoring in the inning, during which eleven straight Tech batters reached base safely. <br> <br> Georgia State cut the lead to nine-to-four with an unearned run in the fifth inning and a sacrifice fly from Michael Nelson in the sixth. Garrett Greer hit a solo home run in the eighth to make the score nine-to-five. Tech put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the eighth. Mike Nickeas drove in two runs with a bases-loaded single, and Eric Patterson drove in the game&#39;s final run with a sacrifice fly. <br> <br> Georgia State starter Ronnie Robinson (1-1) took the loss, allowing eight runs on five hits and four walks in three-and-a-third innings. <br> <br> In Athens, Chris Cochran scattered ten hits and four runs over nine innings, leading James Madison to a seven-to-four win over Georgia Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader. The Bulldogs won the opener 20-to-six. <br> <br> James Madison (8-3) trailed four-to-three heading into the sixth inning of the nightcap, but back-to-back doubles by Mike Butia and Matt Deuchler tied the game up, chasing reliever Scott Lawson (0-1). The Dukes then loaded the bases before a Pat Cunningham sacrifice fly and a two-run single by Brent Metheny. Metheny ended up three-for-five, and Travis Ebaught was three-for-four with two runs and one R-B-I. Cochran (2-0) struck out four and walked only one. <br> <br> In the first game, Georgia (4-2) pounded out 22 hits. Fifteen went for extra bases -- including a school-record nine doubles -- and every Bulldog starter had at least one hit and scored a run. <br> <br> The Bulldogs broke open a one-run game in the fourth, scoring nine runs on eight hits. Lee Mitchell hit a two-run home run, his second of the day, followed by a two-run double by Clint Sammons and a two-run homer by Justin McClain. Chaz Lytle went four-for-five with three runs scored and two R-B-Is. <br> <br> Mickey Westphal (1-0) held the Dukes to four runs in six innings to get the win. Dan Meyer, who gave up eight runs in three-plus innings, took the loss to fall to one-and-one. <br> <br>
