WAYNESBORO - Law enforcement buffs have discovered a unique source for complementing their model patrol car collections in east Georgia.
Paul Gay, a Burke County sheriff's dispatcher and part-time security guard, employs a lifetime of model-making skills to customize miniature cruisers. Besides building his own collection of 550 tiny cars, Gay has sold cars across the country and as far away as England.
The 33-year-old Gay says his fascination with the mini-cars began nine years ago when he wandered into a Wal-Mart toy department. Now he is using the model-making skills he learned as a youngster to customize police vehicles.
Using cars manufactured by Road Champs, Gay has customized 20 vehicles for Georgia State Patrol troopers. For 20 dollars, they get a virtual copy of their own patrol car, complete with the car number on the top and a dust-free container for storage.
Gay gets tiny decals to make the cars resemble those of local agencies, including the Waynesboro Police Department and the sheriff's offices in Burke County and Aiken County.
