FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - An Augusta, Ga., man - estranged from his wife who is an officer at Pope Air Force Base - has been charged with murder in his wife's death in South Carolina.
Second Lt. Annise Hall, 32, was fatally stabbed Sunday in front of the couple's 1-year-old daughter after her husband abducted her and led a trooper on a high-speed chase, authorities said.

During the chase, the driver pulled to the side of the road, but sped off when the trooper got out of his car.
``The state trooper said he could see him assaulting the lady in the back seat,'' Darlington County (S.C.) Sheriff Glenn Campbell said.

Charles Oliver Hall, 32, of Augusta, Ga., was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder, kidnapping and child endangerment.

Annise and Charles Hall met at a gas station off Interstate 20 just north of Florence, S.C., so she could pick up the 1-year-old, who had been visiting her father, Campbell said.

Annise Hall's sister, her other daughter and Charles Hall's 11-year-old son also were at the store.

``They met him, and he gave the two older children some money to buy some things at the store,'' Campbell said. The sheriff said Annise Hall's sister and the children went into the store.

Annise Hall ``went into his car to get the child,'' Campbell said. ``When she opened the door, he shoved her in and took off.'' A store clerk called 911.

Annise Hall, who lived in Sanford, had been stationed in Fayetteville since April, serving in the 43rd Comptroller Squadron at Pope.
The three children have been placed with South Carolina's Department of Social Services, Campbell said.
