ATLANTA - A health insurance company has been fined for failing to make timely reimbursements.
Insurance Commissioner John Oxendine said Tuesday One Health Plan of Georgia Incorporated was fined $200,000 for violating Georgia's prompt pay law.
The law requires health insurers to pay doctors and consumers within 15 working days or notify them why the claim can't be paid.
Oxendine said the state does not require 100 percent, but does want companies to try to comply so doctors and nurses aren't wondering if they're going to be paid.
Oxendine said a dozen health insurers were fined a total of $1 million in 2000 and 2001 for violating Georgia's prompt pay law - including a $95,000 fine for One Health.
A One Health spokeswoman said Georgia is one of the few - if not the only - states that has a 15-day requirement, saying most allow 30- or 45-day periods.
