CARTERSVILLE - A Bartow County woman has been sentenced to six months in an adult detention center after her conviction on animal cruelty charges.

Rebecca Sue Lowe was convicted in February of three counts of animal cruelty.

Bartow County Superior Court Judge David Smith Tuesday gave Lowe a 36-month sentence with six months to be served and 30 months probation. She also was ordered to pay a $3,000 fine and $4,000 in restitution to the veterinarian who boarded some of the husky dogs.

The sentencing ended the case that began in March of last year when the Bartow County Animal Control office was inundated by calls from people concerned about the animals' welfare.

Lowe operated a commercial kennel raising husky dogs at her property in Taylorsville.

During the February trial, Ray DeLuca, an inspector for the Georgia Department of Agriculture, said many of the animals were malnourished when he visited the site on April 19, 2001.

He said only one animal had any food, many animals had no water and the ones who did had filthy water he wouldn't give to anything.

She was originally charged with 32 counts of cruelty to animals, but that was dropped to four counts by the district attorney's office prior to the trial.
