James Watkins, who will work at the off-campus office, said ``We see a good pool of quality applicants through our recruiting efforts, but the yield has not been one that has been very productive.''
Watkins, a former admissions counselor at Clark Atlanta University, was hired in October by the Athens university and has already visited more than 100 high schools in the Atlanta area.
UGA admission officials say many minority students are accepted to the university, but opt to attend other colleges. About 85 percent of UGA's population is made up of white students. Black students make up about five-point-seven percent of the school's population. In Georgia, blacks make up about 29 percent of the total population.
The office, located about ten miles from downtown Atlanta in Decatur, will serve as a way for minorities to learn about the university.
Another recruiting office in Tifton will serve as a home base for the university's recruiting efforts in south Georgia. The Tifton office is still in the developmental stage.
Earlier plans to open an office in Griffin have been postponed due to budget cuts.
