THOMSON - The decomposing body of a baby wrapped in plastic bags was found Friday on the lawn of a duplex in Thomson.

The infant was about three feet from where a worker was finishing filling a trench with dirt, said Leonard Hill, who spotted the baby when he stopped during his morning walk to talk to the construction worker.

The tractor had stopped just short of crushing the child's head, Hill said.

``I saw the bags and I thought it was trash,'' said Hill, 45. ``I saw arms and legs coming out of the bag. I starting walking backward and yelling `Hey, it's a baby!''

The body was transported to the state crime lab in suburban Atlanta for an autopsy to help determine age, race and gender. Witnesses said the infant appeared to have the umbilical cord still attached.

Officers were asking residents in the area about any women who were known to be pregnant, said Special Agent Mike Seigler of the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which was assisting Thomson police.

``Hopefully somebody will come forward that may know something,'' Seigler said. ``It's hard to imagine someone being pregnant that delivered without anyone knowing about it.''
