FORT WORTH, Texas - No problems with side-to-side movements like those that doomed American Airlines Flight 587 were detected on the tail of a second Airbus A300-600 owned by the airline, officials at American said Sunday.
The voluntary ultrasonic test was conducted by the Fort Worth carrier after the Federal Aviation Administration last week said it would require inspections of the Airbus jetliners.
"We look forward to returning these two aircraft to service after they complete their scheduled maintenance base visits," said Dan Huffman, American's senior vice president of maintenance and engineering.
The FAA said it would require airlines to conduct detailed visual inspections of the tail and other parts of A300-600s and A310s that have experienced side-to-side movements as strong as those recorded by Flight 587 before it crashed.
The flight crashed Nov. 12 shortly after taking off from New York's Kennedy Airport, killing 265 people.
