PELHAM - Sixteen people have been arrested in what investigators describe as a scheme to file forged income reports to claim tax refunds. Authorities expect more people to turn themselves in.
Authorities said the participants submitted forged W-2 forms at a private Pelham tax office -- some citing companies they had not worked for, and others with falsified salary and withholding information.
The case came to light after the Internal Revenue Service discovered the inaccuracies.
Fifteen other people have been arrested, and authorities said federal charges are possible as well following a separate IRS investigation. They said at least 50 people may have been involved.
All the fraudulent tax filings discovered so far were traced to three electronic tax filing offices in Pelham. The arrests include people from three counties, but officials believe people from four other counties may be involved.
Pelham police inviestigator Rod Williams said, ``It's either turn yourself in, or we're coming to get you. You can save yourself the embarrassment of it being at home or at work.''
No charges have been filed against the offices where the forms were filed.
