NEW YORK - ESPN and ESPN have added new time slots to their major league baseball coverage this season -- national cable telecasts on Monday nights and Wednesday afternoons.
The addition of games became possible after The Walt Disney Co., the parent of ESPN, acquired the package from Fox Family, which has been renamed ABC Family.
The ESPN/ESPN2 baseball lineup will have five games per week, including Sunday night games and Wednesday night doubleheaders. The 2002 schedule on ESPN/ESPN2 will total about 160 games, up from 111 last season.
"We're expanding ESPN's commitment to be the fan's best daily source for major league baseball action, highlights and news," ESPN president George Bodenheimer said.
The baseball season opens on March 31, with ESPN2 televising the only game of the day -- the Cleveland Indians at the Anaheim Angels (8 p.m. EDT). The Angels are owned by Disney.
