Police charge 13-year-old middle school student with bringing weapon to school

AUGUSTA - A 13-year-old female student at Sego Middle School in Augusta has been charged with bringing a gun to school. <br> <br> The girl, who is taking medication for depression, was charged Tuesday with bringing her father&#39;s .22-caliber pistol in her purse to the school. <br> <br> Richmond County Sheriff&#39;s Office Investigator Calvin Chew said she hid the unloaded weapon in the bushes in a field used for physical education. <br> <br> Other children alerted an assistant principal, who notified a school officer. <br> <br> The girl told police she put the gun in her purse and forgot to take it out before leaving for school. <br> <br> She was charged with carrying a weapon on school property and taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital for evaluation. <br> <br> She was released to her parents pending a hearing before a juvenile court judge. <br> <br> Before Tuesday&#39;s incident, the girl had been under a doctor&#39;s care for depression. Police said she was suspended from the school pending a hearing before the Richmond County Board of Education.
