KISSIMMEE, FLORIDA - Catcher Eddie Perez was traded Thursday from the Atlanta Braves to the Cleveland Indians for a player to be named.
The 33-year-old Perez was the Braves' backup catcher to Javy Lopez from 1996-99, but shoulder injuries kept him sidelined for most of the last two seasons.
The right-handed hitting Perez hit .188 with three RBI's in 14 spring games.
In his six seasons with the Braves, Perez hit .258 with 24 homers and 104 RBI's in 325 games.
The Braves acquired catcher Henry Blanco from the Milwaukee Brewers Thursday for catcher Paul Bako and pitcher Jose Cabrera.
Bako and Perez had been battling for Atlanta's backup role, which now goes to Blanco.
The Indians were looking for a second catcher because Eddie Taubensee will be sidelined for at least two months because of back problems.
