BRADENTON, FLORIDA - Philadelphia Phillies manager Larry Bowa was suspended for one game and fined Thursday as a result of his ejection during the first inning of a spring training game on March 9.

Bob Watson, baseball's vice president of discipline, said he made the decision, citing Bowa for ``his inappropriate conduct toward the umpires before and after his ejection.''

Bowa will be allowed to manage Philadelphia's opener at Atlanta on April 1, then will be suspended for the Phillies' next game, at Turner Field on April 3.

He plans to appeal the suspension, a Phillies official said Thursday during the team's game against Pittsburgh.
In the split-squad game against Cleveland, Bowa charged out of the dugout, was ejected within seconds and continued shouting for another 90 seconds in a face-to-face confrontation.
Later, Bowa admitted being upset umpires didn't call strikes on a pair of checked swings on pitches by David Coggin.
``They missed two calls in the first inning and cost the kid four runs,'' Bowa said then. ``Make the calls. Coggin threw the ball unbelievable. It should have been a 1-2-3 first inning.''
