Northern Arc supporter voted DOT board chairman

ATLANTA - William G. Hasty, a former state legislator and a staunch supporter of the controversial Northern Arc proposed for metro Atlanta, has been elected chairman of the board of the Department of Transportation. <br> <br> Hasty, 80, of Canton was elected unanimously on Thursday to be chairman for the coming year, succeeding Emory McClinton of Atlanta. <br> <br> A former teacher and principal, Hasty was superintendent of the Cherokee County school system and also spent one term as a senator and six terms in the House. He joined the DOT board in 1995. <br> <br> Steve Reynolds, 82, of Lawrenceville was elected vice chairman. Before joining the board in 1984, he served seven terms in the state Senate, six as chairman of its Transportation Committee. <br> <br> Reynolds assured the board the 59-mile, $2.4 billion highway referred to as Northern Arc from Bartow County to Gwinnett County ``will be under way very shortly.&#39;&#39;
