Second soldier dies after artillery shell accident near mess tent

FORT DRUM, N.Y. - Injuries from an artillery shell accident at the U.S. Army post here have claimed the life of a second soldier, an Army spokesman said. <br> <br> Staff Sgt. Eric Hall, 34, of Phoenix, died Wednesday night at Samaritan Medical Center, Maj. Kenneth McDorman of the 10th Mountain Division said Thursday. Hall was a linguist with the 110th Military Intelligence Battalion, which was camped out at Fort Drum, 75 miles north of Syracuse. <br> <br> The two high-explosive shells fired from a howitzer during a training exercise Wednesday landed about 1 1/2 miles short of their target, exploding near a tent where soldiers were eating breakfast. <br> <br> William Hamm, 34, was also killed. Of the 13 soldiers wounded, seven remained hospitalized Thursday in stable condition. Two of the soldiers wounded were from Georgia. <br> <br> A military team is investigating, and will likely issue a report in six to nine months, said Department of Defense spokeswoman Elaine Kanellis.
