MARIETTA - Cobb County commissioners have agreed to join the Atlanta region's first metrowide transit system.

Commissioners voted Tuesday night in favor of the deal between the county and the Georgia Regional Transportation Authority. Chairman Bill Byrne voted against the agreement.

As it stands, the transportation authority will provide Cobb County with new express bus routes to downtown Atlanta and possibly to Hartsfield Atlanta International Airport.

Clayton, Douglas, Coweta and Henry counties were the first to join the program to provide such service from their regions to downtown Atlanta.

Paulding County also approved an agreement with the authority Tuesday.

The authority is providing the service to each county in exchange for a one-time payment toward the operating costs for the first three years.

Clayton, Coweta, Henry and Douglas counties already have ratified similar versions of the agreement. Cherokee and Fayette counties have both voted against it. Dekalb, Forsyth, Fulton, Gwinnett and Rockdale have until Friday to vote on the issue.
