CARTERSVILLE - A tanker truck carrying acetic acid overturned Thursday on Interstate 75, leaving traffic backed up for hours.

The truck traveling northbound hit a guardrail just south of exit 293 Thursday afternoon, officials said. After skidding along the rail for about 100 yards, the truck overturned in a ditch off the side of I-75.

Craig Millsap, deputy director of the Bartow County Emergency Management Agency, said the truck, owned by Quality Carriers and Co., was going to Chattanooga, Tenn. It was carrying 46,000 pounds of acetic acid solution. There were no leaks in the tank and all valves worked properly.

Acetic acid is flammable and causes severe burns on contact with skin.

The driver, Billy King of Trenton, was conscious when paramedics arrived on the scene. He was taken to Emory Cartersville Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. He was listed in stable condition Thursday.

RemTec of Marietta sent a hazardous materials team and the trucking company sent another tanker truck to pick up the chemical. RemTec pumped the material to the new truck.

Only one lane of the interstate was closed, Millsap said.

``We're not sure exactly what happened,'' he said. ``We won't know until after the police interview the driver."
