SAVANNAH - Georgia's first sales tax holiday got off to a busy start. Retailers opened their doors early Thursday for customers eager to save pennies on the dollar on computers, clothes and school supplies for the fall.
Prodded by Governor Barnes, the state Legislature approved tax-free shopping sprees for Thursday and today and again on August second and third. Exempted from state and local sales taxes are school supplies, clothing items under $100 and up to $1,500 spent on computers and accessories.
Many retailers extended their hours and had extra employees working to handle the crowds for the Easter weekend.
