ATLANTA - The Georgia-Pacific board of directors will vote May 7 on a plan to separate the corporation's consumer and building products divisions.
The vote on the new corporate structure will coincide with the Atlanta-based company's annual shareholders meeting. Georgia-Pacific spokesman Greg Guest would not give details of the plan.
``We're taking very distinctive parts and separating them,'' Guest said Friday. ``How do we do that? That's in the details that will come next month.''
The company also said Friday that Lee Thomas, former executive vice president of consumer products, has been named president of the building products and distribution business.
Georgia-Pacific began with an Augusta lumberyard 75 years ago. The company, which now sells products such as Brawny paper towels and Dixie cups, has been trying to move away from a dependence on swinging cycles in its paper and building products businesses.
Chief executive Pete Correll has said that splitting off the building products business which sells lumber, plywood and gypsum wallboard would ``unlock the value'' of the stock held in the steadier tissues products business.
