GALVESTON, TEXAS - Private investigators spent two hours Saturday wading through Galveston Bay in an unsuccessful search for the head of a murder victim.

Investigators hired by relatives of Morris Black say his head is crucial evidence in the murder case against Robert Durst, the heir of a wealthy Manhattan real estate family.

Durst, who was Black's neighbor in Galveston, is accused of murdering and dismembering the 71-year-old man. He has pleaded innocent.

Saturday's search was conducted in an area where Black's limbs and torso were found in September by a fisherman. Six investigators waded through waist-deep water while two divers searched farther off shore.

A Galveston police officer also was on hand.

Jeff Moore, an investigator with the detective agency, said the search would eventually resume.

Durst, 58, is jailed in Galveston without bail. He was arrested and charged with his neighbor's death on Oct. 9 and immediately posted $300,000 bond, but skipped an Oct. 16 court date.

Durst was arrested in Bethlehem, Pa., on Nov. 30, after allegedly shoplifting a sandwich and other goods from a grocery store, even though he had $500 in his pocket.

Authorities also want to question him in the disappearance of his wife, Kathleen Durst, and the Christmas Eve 2000 slaying of one of his best friends, writer Susan Berman.

Durst's attorney, Dick DeGuerin, got a gag order in the case, complaining that New York authorities investigating the disappearance of Durst's wife had made public statements that hurt his client's chances for a fair trial.
