WASHINGTON - Fear of flying has declined since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, and six in 10 Americans say they would fight back against airborne terrorists, polls say.

Four in five in an ABC News poll say security is better now than when they flew before Sept. 11, and a third of the total say security is much better.

Six in 10 say they would try to fight terrorists attempting to take over a plane, while half that many say they would leave it to someone else better able to handle it. Passengers on one of the flights hijacked on Sept. 11 are believed to have fought back against the terrorists and forced the airliner to crash in Pennsylvania.

Fear of flying has dropped, as well, with a third now saying they're worried about air travel because of the risk of terrorism. That's down from four in 10 in October, and six in 10 just after the attacks.

People were about evenly split in a CBS News poll out Wednesday on whether the government has done enough to improve airport security. More than half, 54 percent, said the airlines have not done enough to improve security.

Half in the CBS poll said they would be willing to carry a national electronic identification card with detailed information about them, while just over four in 10 were not willing to do that. Federal officials have been debating whether such a card could help speed up airport security procedures.

Asked about security procedures taken by the airlines, just over half said airlines have done the right thing and an additional three in 10 said they haven't gone far enough. Only one in 10 said they have gone too far.

The ABC poll, of 1,029 adults, was conducted by telephone between Jan 30 and Feb. 3. The CBS News poll, of 861 adults, was conducted Feb. 24-26. Both polls had error margins of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
