ATLANTA - Three school systems in metro Atlanta are considering giving students a shorter summer but more breaks during the year.
The Fayette, Rockdale and Douglas county school systems are considering new school calendars that give students more one-week breaks during the year.

The boards in the three counties will vote on the schedules -- called balanced calendars -- in coming weeks.

A calendar change in any of the three systems would go into effect for the 2003-2004.
Henry County schools begins a balanced on August fifth. A few small Georgia school systems have made similar changes in their calendars.
The assistant superintendent of Fayette County schools -- Stuart Bennett -- says teachers seem to favor the calendar that gives more breaks during the year.
But working parents are concerned about how to arrange childcare during weeklong breaks.
