SAVANNAH - State officials were granted legal custody Wednesday of a baby girl found abandoned in a Dumpster last month.
The child, who is being called Baby Grace, was placed in foster care Jan. 24 after Juvenile Judge Juan Ayala granted custody to the Chatham County Department of Family and Children Services. Police have not identified the birth mother.
``In the best interest of the child, we need to find a home,'' said said Earline Wesley Davis, director of DFCS. ``That is adoption.''
A Savannah garbage truck driver found the child in a bin of trash behind a car dealership on Jan. 21. Davis said steps will be taken to advertise in the Savannah Morning News and give the birth parents a chance to come forward.
Davis anticipates returning to court in 60 days, after the advertising begins.
``That is when we will be asking the court to terminate parental rights,'' Davis said.
