ALPHARETTA - One candidate for governor is backing the idea of carving out a new county north of Atlanta.

Cobb County Commission Chairman Bill Byrne says he supports the revival of Milton County. It was once a separate county north of Atlanta -- but it merged with Fulton County in 1930.

Some north Fulton County residents have been pushing to re-establish Milton County to separate themselves from Atlanta.

Byrne is facing opposition from state school superintendent Linda Schrenko and former state Senator Sonny Perdue in the Republican primary.
Re-creating Milton County would NOT be easy. The state constitution caps the number of counties at the current 159. And Democrats who control the Legislature don't seem interested in the split.
