WOODSTOCK - State fire officials will be back in Woodstock Tuesday trying to determine what caused a fire that destroyed a historic Cherokee County church.
Firefighters were called to Mount Carmel Baptist Church just before noon yesterday. No one was inside when the blaze began and authorities said no one was injured.
Some church members watched in disbelief as the roof of the 10,000-square-foot, one-story brick church exploded and then caved in.
Members plan a vigil tonight in the church parking lot.
Nearly 350 people belong to the church that was established in 1867.
A tornado struck the building in 1992 during services but it was rebuilt the next year. The pastor says the congregation plans to rebuild after the fire.
