DETROIT - DaimlerChrysler AG is recalling 1.6 million 1993-1998 model year Jeep Grand Cherokees in response to consumer claims the vehicle may not be in "park" even though the gear shift is placed in that position.
At least 59 injuries have been blamed on the problem, said DaimlerChrysler spokeswoman Angela Spencer Ford.

She said there had been at least 200 claims by owners complaining of the problem which could result in the vehicle moving inadvertently.
While no defect was found during an investigation, DaimlerChrysler said to resolve the problem, it will install an additional detent system in the floor shifter mechanism to help ensure the shifter is fully engaged in "park."
Owners will receive notices shortly by mail about the recall, said Matt Reynolds, director of safety compliance for DaimlerChrysler.
