DAYTONA BEACH, FLA.- Wade Burton is celebrating his first Daytona 500 victory and his fourth Winston Cup victory in 251 starts.
Burton got the victory Sunday in a Dodge, the first time Dodge has won a Daytona 500 since 1974. Elliott Sadler was second, followed by Geoff Bodine. Kurt Busch and defending Daytona 500 winner Michael Waltrip.
Burton got some help from Sterling Marlin. Marlin got out of his car during a stoppage and was penalized for repairing some damage. That sent him to the back of the pack for the final three laps after a late red flag. NASCAR rules prevent anyone from working on a car during a red-flag period.
There was an 18-car accident on the 149th lap. That left only 17 cars running. There were also nine caution flags during the race.
Defending Winston Cup Champ Jeff Gordon, involved in that last stoppage, finished ninth. Dawsonville's Bill Elliot was 11th.
